Al viajar a un país de habla inglesa, podemos sorprendernos al ver que el inglés que nos enseñaron no es el que comúnmente se utiliza en la calle. Como en todo idioma, en el inglés existen unos atajos que debemos tener siempre presente. A continuación, algunos:


Nope: no

Yup: sí

Gimme: dame

Gotta: tener que, debe

Lotta: mucho

Watcha (= What are you doing?): ¿Qué haces?

Gonna (=I am going to): Voy a

Wanna (=I want): querer

Iffy: incierto / dudoso

Bro / sis: hermano / hermana

Granny: abuela

Gramps: abuelos

Mom: madre

Dad: padre

Cuz: primo

I'm iffy about it: no estoy muy seguro

Whatchamacallit?: ¿Y eso qué es?

Whatshisname?: ¿Cómo se llama?

Whatshisface?: ¿Quién es ese?


Para acabar, aquí tiene algunas abreviaturas que aparecen a menudo:


B.Y.O.B. (Bring your own beer / booze / bottle - traiga su propia cabeza (se utiliza si nos invitan a una fiesta)

R.S.V.P. (Call if you can't make it) - avisar si no se va a la fiesta

T.G.I.F. (Thank God it's Friday) - ¡Por fin es viernes!

Como todo el mundo sabe, el coche es la niña de los ojos de los americanos. No es de extrañar, pues, que la red de carreteras sea mucho más densa que la de ferrocarriles. A continuación le ofrecemos un poco de vocabulario:

 

Interstate: autopista

Intersection / crossing: cruce

Shortcut: atajo

Yield!: ceda el paso

Step on it!: ¡Pisalo! (el acelerador)

To honk the horn / to beep / to toot: tocar la bocina

(Car) registration: los papeles del coche

Driver's license: carnet de conducir

To hand a right / left: girar a la derecha / a la izquierda

To pull up to (the garage): aparcar (en el garaje)

 

Y yendo para la gasolinería, no te olvides de:

 

A to run out of gas: quedarse sin gasolina

Fill'er up!: Lleno, por favor

Mini-serve: sólo gasolinera

Full-serve: gasolinera con servicios

To hitch a ride: hacer autoestop

To hit the road: ponerse en marcha

To give someone a ride: llevar a alguien en el coche

Where are you headed?: ¿Hacia dónde vas?

Where do you wanna be dropped off?: ¿Dónde quiere que le deje?

My wheels: mi carro

Station wagon: break

Hatch back: furgoneta

A low rider: gran coche de ciudad

Rag top: descapotable

Gas guzzler: coche que consume mucha gasolina

Van: furgoneta

Designated driver: persona de un grupo al que le ha tocado no beber para conducir.

Wheel sucker: persona que conduce pegada al volante.

Tailgater: coche que va pegado al parachoques del de delante
