Notes from CAST

Plain sticky notes

New Ideas

Use CAST's spinner game acitivity to show difference between good lesson and UDL lesson that shows multiple means of representation. Image detectives helps students analyze pictures--research shows that poor readers don't look at pictures to support their reading-David Rose Use strategies from Image detectives and put them in ppt to scaffold students gathering info from images i.e. trail of tears Benificial to me: showed examples that were not right, medium group discussion (get name)

Good Quotes

The future is in the Margins-Beth and David How do we change a threatening situation into a challenging one...-CAST Don't fix what's not broken-there are some lessons that already have UDL-ness about them--Grace "I don't understand" should be met with "Let's do it another way"-CAST UDL participant

Increase Engagement

Support student's affective learning by providing multiple means of engagement. Try increasing motivation for learning math by showing video clips and taking virtual field trips. After all, Math is everywhere!

Presenting Materials

Support student's recognition learning by providing multiple ways of presenting materials. Jump out of the text books and let students use a variety of tools. The Internet has a variety of sites that help students in Math.

Physical Access

Physical Access to Math is important! Students need to be able to hold rulers, listen to talking calculators and maybe even manipulate objects virtually. Graph paper may make a difference for students' sloppy work.

Student Expression

Support student's strategic learning by providing multiple means of expression. Let them show their knowledge through different ways other than paper and pencil.

Practice make Perfect

Sometimes a student just needs to practice. The internet is a great tool for that. Find free online practice tools to let students work on at home or during free time at school.

Hi Lorna

Please let me know if these activities are OK. Are they too hard or too easy? Also let me know what activities don't work (technical issues.) I won't know unless someone tells me! Have fun learning! Gayle gunderwood@alleganaesa.org

Digital Native vs Digital Imigrants

DIGITAL NATIVES -Like receiving information quickly from multiple media sources. -Like parallel processing and multi-tasking. -Like processing pictures, sounds and video before text. -Like random access to hyperlinked multimedia information. -Like to network with others. -Like to learn “just in time”. DIGITAL IMIGRANTS -Like slow and controlled release of information from limited sources. -Like singular processing and single or limited tasking. -Like processing text before pictures, sounds and video. -Like to receive information linearly, logically and sequentially. -Like to work independently. -Like to learn “just in case”.

Ideas

Create a survey using ppt that provides resources for 'no' answers. e.g. Do you know how to (blank) If 'yes', go to next slide if 'no' slide links to training or resources. Online example found at the self-assessment on http://www.edutopia.org/teaching-module-technology-integration-how
