Welcome to the 5th Grade Social Studies Page!
I will be posting homework and class projects on this page as a backup to the information given to your child in class.
Every month the Learning Tree has a Virtue of the Month. Virtues are the essence of who we are. They are the content of our character and the basis of genuine happiness. Please support your child in learning about this Virtue by discussing the Virtue with your child daily. September's Virtue is Love.
We have an ongoing project referred to as our Ancestor-Contemporary-Proverb Project (ACP). The purpose of this project is to expose each child to the heroes and sheroes in our communities who are often unknown or forgotten so that they may see themselves in these people.
Every week an Ancestor - someone who has passed away who has made a major contribution to people of color, a Contemporary - someone who is currently making a contribution to people of color, and a Proverb- a saying or quote that states a general truth or piece of advice will be selected that embodies the Virtue of the Month.
The children are assigned to research 5 facts about the Ancestor and the Contemporary. Three facts may be basic information such as when the person lived and died or where they were from, where they lived and the education they received or any other such information. Two facts should be about the contribution(s) the person made to the community.
The children should discuss the Proverb with their families and discover the meaning of the proverb. Then they should record their understanding of the Proverb.
They may use the internet to do their research but it would be wonderful if they could read a small book or article about the person. Engage them to discuss what they have discovered. The informmation we review in class will be included in their assessments in a general way.
