In the epic poem, the Odyssey, we learn about a hero. His name is Odysseus and he is the king of Ithaca. He was chosen by king Menelaus to fight in the Trojan War for king Menelaus’s wife, Helen. Odysseus Faces many obstacles as he is faced with the fact that he has to head back home which is when all the obstacles occur caused by the Greek god Poseidon .After Odysseus had won the war, he had taken all of the fame of winning the war and had not said anything about being helped. In a way Odysseus is an epic hero because he is very fearful and is not afraid of anything. He demonstrates this by not letting the Cyclops scare him or let him eat all of his men to being able the noise of the sirens and all the obstacles he faces in the poem.
Very clever, this is what Odysseus is. He demonstrates many obstacles that he had faced which he had to use his brains and knowledge to escape. For example, he had to trick the Cyclops into drinking the wine to make him drunk. Then he had to create sharp sake to stab the Cyclops in the eye. He had to hit him just perfect enough to hurt him but not kill him. He was then able to escape as the Cyclops opened the door to the cave and to me; it shows me how clever Odysseus is and how smart he is. “Men today we will fight!”(Homer 1076)
Bravery would be another large characteristic about odysseus. He proves this by being able to fight the Cyclops, being able to listen and stand the noise of the sirens, escaping the wrath Scylla and being able to leave calypso to find his way home. He is very brave and he never gives up hope in getting home, even if it takes him ten years. He was also willing to fight in the Trojan War to save king Menelaus wife, Helen. “We shall never quit men” (Homer 1062)
In conclusion, Odysseus is a very brave, Strong courageous and very clever man than fought many monsters and was able to win the Trojan War. Even though Odysseus had conquered all of these obstacles, he had plenty of help from the gods when he was in serious trouble. Odysseus is a man of his word and has a very large heart that helps him through everything that comes in his way.
Metacognitive Questions
Metacognition is awareness of one’s own thought processes. To be able to monitor and assess one’s own learning, and to take corrective action to overcome weaknesses, is vital in becoming a self-directed learner.
